Interview with Juli Knapp

Hey guys! I come to you again today with yet another surprise interview. Juli Knapp is an incredible business woman who has been a partner to and friend of my dad’s for many years. I am so excited to have the privilege of interviewing Juli! Here we go.

Q: Hi Juli! Where are you from?

A: Minneapolis, MN

Q: When and how did your interest in music begin?

A: EARLY…I used to sneak into the bars (shhh…) to watch local bands play.

Q: Lol! Is your experience with music hobby or career-based?

A: Accidentally career based

Q: That’s so cool! What is your title?

A:  Founder, J Knapp Entertainment Consulting for last 10 years, though prior to feeling ready to open my own company I was an A&R Admin / Special Projects / Operations executive at Paisley Park, Simitar Entertainment and Sony Music/Columbia Records for a combined total of more than 20 years.

Q: Wow! So how many years of experience do you have total?

A: Over 30, which is exceptional since I keep turning 29 every birthday

Q: HAHA! What are some of the biggest opportunities you’ve been presented with?

A: Following a career path where my “job” was also my “hobby”, including the opportunity to meet and work closely with some of the biggest names in the music of my day.

Q: That is truly incredible. Who are some of your favorite artists?

A: Prince, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone….I am realizing this list is way too long to type, there are LOADS more.

Q: Who would you consider to be your best connection(s) in the industry?

A: Mmmmm….many, but I don’t want to name drop or list folks without their permission.

Q: Makes sense. Do you have any music of your own you’d be willing to share with us?

A: HA!  You definitely don’t want to hear me perform….ever.

Q: I love how I keep sending that question to business people and I get that response every time! What advice or words of wisdom do you have for my readers as well as myself?

A:  BE YOURSELF!  Not everyone is going to “get” or appreciate you, keep going anyway, and don’t take it personally.  We all see, hear and feel things differently – stay focused on the goal and true to YOU.

Q: That is amazing advice thank you for that! What would you say have been some of your biggest mistakes so far?

A: Waayyyy too many to list!  Though one of the first ones I recall is that I hung up on the real Michael Jackson who was calling for my boss because I thought it was a prank…not so much.

Q: Yikes! Who would you consider as your mentor(s) in the industry?

A: Also too many to list!  Prince will always top the list though.

Q: And what are three interesting and unrelated facts about yourself?

A: If I weren’t working in music, I’d have tried to be a chef, I love to cook.  I also love to paint, haven’t made the time in years, but considering a new canvas soon!

Q: That’s also very cool! Is there anything else you’d like to share before we end the interview?

A: Oh goodness, I have overshared already!

Lol! Thank you so much for sharing Juli!
